In February 2021, Antwerp Zeebrugge announced the launch of the merger of their respective ports. Since signing the shareholders’ agreement of the union on Apr 22, 2022, the two ports are now collectively called the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.

With this union, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges aims to become the first global port that reconciles economy, people, and climate. Along with receiving the title of Europe’s largest export port, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges will also be the continent’s biggest port for vehicles. This merged entity will also be providing nearly 74,000 direct and 90,000 indirect jobs, thereby contributing to the country’s GDP.

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges will look to capitalize on the strengths of both port locations and concentrate its strategy on containers, breakbulk, RoRo traffic, and chemicals and reinforce its position as one of the main gateways of Europe. The port has all the necessary means to play an increasingly important role on the global logistics stage.

Dirk De fauw, Mayor of the City of Bruges and Vice-President of Port of Antwerp-Bruges, said, As Mayor of the City of Bruges and Vice-President of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, I am convinced that this merger will lead to sustainable growth in economic activity and jobs in both sites, and boost Flanders’ international reputation around the world. Together, we are stronger”.
