Context is the sum of all those factors working together. It’s not one data point. It’s the relationship between dozens of them, understood in the moment they matter.
Without that understanding, an AI agent has no basis to distinguish a delay that demands immediate action from one that doesn’t warrant escalation. It can only react to the signal in front of it, and that’s where things go wrong. Not because the AI made a mistake, but because it never had what it needed to make the right call in the first place.
Why most agents lack context
Building genuine operational context takes years. It can’t be assembled from general enterprise data. It can’t be purchased from a model provider, and it can’t be replicated quickly.
Meaningful supply chain context requires an AI system to understand not just that a shipment is delayed, but:
- Carrier behavior patterns — how this specific carrier typically performs on this lane, what their communication norms are, and how reliably they respond to outreach
- Regional constraints — the port conditions, regulatory factors, and infrastructure realities that shape what options are actually available
- Shipment urgency — the downstream commitments, customer tier, and inventory position that determine how aggressively to act
- Contractual obligations — the service-level agreements and penalty structures that change the financial stakes of a delay
- Network-wide impact — how this exception interacts with other exceptions across the same customer, facility, or lane
No single data point provides this. It emerges from years of validated collection across a global logistics network paired with the domain expertise to interpret it correctly.
This is why data volume and data meaning are not the same thing. Your system could ingest petabytes of logistics data and still have agents that produce generic recommendations. The question isn’t how much data you have.
